General Pottery Painting Questions

What is paint-your-own pottery?

It is a creative experience where you choose a ceramic piece, paint it your way, and we glaze and fire it for you. The finished result is shiny, colorful, and totally one of a kind!

Do I have to be artistic to paint something?

Nope! That is the best thing about As You Wish - anyone can do it. We have sticker stencils, traceables, and lots of tools to help you create your masterpiece. For inspiration, check out our YouTube channel and Ideas Center.

What kinds of pottery can I paint?

Our shelves are filled with everything from mugs and plates to seasonal items and figurines. We rotate pieces often, so there is always something new to discover!

How long does it take to paint a piece?

Most guests spend about 1-2 hours in the studio, but you are welcome to take your time and enjoy the process.

Can I walk in, or do I need a reservation?

Walk ins are always welcome! If you are visiting with a group or during peak times (summer and holiday seasons), a reservation is highly recommended to guarantee a table is available at your preferred day and time! You can make a reservation online!

Can I paint a previously purchased piece?

You can absolutely bring in pottery from a previous visit to paint another day! We can only fire pottery purchased from our studios to make sure it is compatible with our glaze and kiln process.

Are food and drinks allowed in the studio?

Absolutely! You can bring in any snacks or drinks in with you to enjoy while you paint. Our studios also allow BYOB after 4pm every day! Miscellaneous snacks and drinks are available for purchase in the studio if you forget to bring your own or get hungry while you're painting.

Firing, Glazing, and Pick Up

What happens after I paint my piece?

We glaze and fire your pottery in our kilns. This process usually takes about 3 days. You won't be notified when your pottery is ready!

Why does my pottery need to be fired in a kiln?

Firing turns the glaze into a glass-like finish and makes your piece food-safe and durable. It is what gives your pottery its shiny, finished look!

Can I take my piece home the same day?

Not if you are using pottery paints or glazes - it must be fired. Some studios may offer same-day options with acrylic paint for display-only items, which are not food-safe.

How long do I have to pick up my pottery?

We hold finished pieces for 21 days after they are ready. Please pick them up as soon as you can so they make it home with you! You can always contact your local studio to confirm your items are still there if you're late to pick up, or request a later pickup before the 21 day period ends.

Can someone else pick up my pottery?

Yes! Just make sure they know the name and phone number for the person who painted in the studio.

Studio Policies and Safety

Are the finished pieces food safe, microwave safe, and dishwasher safe?

Yes. After being fired in the kiln, all pieces are food safe and non-toxic. There is only one specialty glaze color that is not food safe, Glass Green, and should be used for decorative purposes only. Your pieces are dishwasher safe, but we recommend hand washing to increase the longevity of the piece and keep them looking their best. Pottery pieces can be put in the microwave, but should be handled carefully as they will get very hot.

What are your health and safety practices?

We follow all current health and safety guidelines and work hard to keep our studios both clean and comfortable. Please contact your local studio if you have any questions.

How do you protect my personal and credit card information?

We take your security seriously. All online and in store payments are processed securely and in compliance with industry standards.
